Interior painting is one surefire way to refresh and liven up your home – and as a homeowner, you have quite a lot of control over how this process goes! But in some cases, did you know that it might be better to opt for an accent wall, rather than painting an entire room? This is great for homeowners who are hesitant to commit to a certain color but still want to refresh how a room looks! Here’s what you need to know about selecting an accent wall, along with a few popular color ideas that work well with all types of rooms.

How to Select an Accent Wall

There is no secret when it comes to accent walls – any wall can serve as an accent wall! But in order to determine which wall would work best in any given room, you’ll want to put a little thought into it and not just make a random selection. Take a step back and consider which wall, if any, grabs your attention as soon as you enter the room. Is there a certain architectural feature or anything special about the wall, such as a fireplace, built-in bookshelf, or a unique piece of artwork?

However, you should avoid picking a wall that has a window, as well as one that isn’t symmetrical – it’ll draw attention away from your paint or whatever you want to highlight. Plus, a dark accent color surrounding windows may create a weird, bright light effect that overwhelms the whole room.

Picking the Right Color for Your Accent Wall

At the end of the day, the color you pick for your accent wall is entirely up to you – after all, you can’t go wrong if you love it! That said, a few colors that homeowners these days tend to love include:

  • Light Blue – Light blue shades like Robin’s egg or powder blue are perfect for accent walls; if you want to go darker, like navy or turquoise, an accent wall can feature just the right amount.
  • Light Green – Lighter greens like mint, sage, or pistachio, can make any room feel fresh and inviting; you could even paint two accent walls this shade to balance things out.
  • Yellow – We don’t see too many opportunities these days to use bright, bold, yellow, but this is a great accent wall color for rooms like dining rooms and living/sitting rooms.
  • Black – Though it might seem bold and pragmatic, black is a timeless choice, and when used in lesser amounts, like on accent walls, it adds true elegance to any room.

Once you’ve painted your accent wall, don’t forget to add any photos, artwork, or other décor to complete the room and ensure that it looks refreshed and feels inviting!
