If it’s been a while since the last time you repainted your home or changed up your design scheme, you might be thinking about how to tackle your next big project. However, nobody wants to put all of this effort in, just to realize they’ve selected an older, outdated color, layout, or trend! Here are 5 once-popular designed trends that should definitively be left in the past.
1. Popcorn Ceilings
Popcorn ceilings still seem to be at least a little popular these days, but now, more and more homeowners are having them removed. These textured ceilings caught on because they offered an easy and affordable way of adding texture and personality to homes. However, many older buildings with popcorn ceilings are a health hazard due to the presence of asbestos. Because of this, it’s always best to have a popcorn ceiling removed professionally – and you have plenty of more gorgeous options for repainting.
2. Granite Overload
In the early 2000s, it felt like you could tour almost any modern home and encounter granite – most often in the form of granite countertops filling out kitchens and bathrooms. It’s without a doubt a beautiful material and shade, but it can be overwhelming in large amounts. Today, accents and trims tend to be far more minimalistic and effective.
3. Animal Prints
You probably know someone who has had an animal-printed piece of furniture or artwork at one point, or maybe even a pattern painted on their walls, and you may be wondering if this trend is still in style. Unfortunately, designers have more-or-less moved on entirely from animal print patterns, in favor of more natural-looking patterns.
4. Soft Pastels
Many older homes still have soft pastel color schemes – and it’s tough to argue against some of these shades and hues withstanding the test of time. However, it seems like ever since the pandemic a few years ago, there’s been a gradual shift away from these lighter, gentler shades in favor of bolder, richer colors that give off warm, happy-go-lucky vibes.
5. Nautical Themes
Unless your house is literally on the beach, including a nautical motif in your home is unwise. This trend isn’t considered outdated in 2025 – it’s often viewed as tacky or cheesy. If you must use a shade of blue in your home, be wary about pairing it with whites and off-whites; instead, a nice metallic shade can be complementary.
If you still have doubts about how to redesign and repaint your home, you shouldn’t hesitate to consult with a team of professional painters. They won’t just ensure spectacular results – they will inform you about current styles and help you pick something that’s both timeless and gorgeous!
